Afternoon Challenge

There are three periods in the Afternoon Challenge. Campers choose one class for each period, from over 50 enrichment and sports options based on their age or grade level at the start of the previous school year. Please refer to the chart for the times that the classes are offered for your child, or click here for a printer-friendly version.

1. New – 3D PUZZLES AND MAZES

The design and artistry of mazes will inspire the mind, while also boggling it! In this hands-on workshop campers will create and solve mechanical puzzles made of metal and wood, as well as design their own puzzles. Mazes and labyrinths will be brought to life as a walk through problem solving experience. These clever puzzles will provide a boost of brainpower and ignite your logic skills!

2. ANIME-TION

The art of cartooning is full of creative expression, humor and fun. Join us to learn techniques of cartooning including sketching and use of color. You will learn to draw familiar faces such as Spiderman, Mickey Mouse and the Simpsons. Next, we will dive into the ultra modern art of Japanese anime. The wildly popular anime characters have larger than normal eyes, exaggerated expressions and a stylized type of design. Your original anime illustrations will reflect your own personality, imagination and artistic style!

3. ARDUINO APPLICATIONS

What is a robot without a brain? Why is a smart phone so smart? How do you make your computer turn a motor? All of these are a result of microcontrollers, the next step in computing and technology. Here is an opportunity to learn how to use microcontrollers using the Arduino platform, a microcontroller that is both simple to use and quite powerful. Learn to basics of electrical engineering and programming as we build a number of projects using just the basic starter kit and your imagination!

4. New – THE ART OF MOVEMENT

Emotion evokes motions! In The Art of Movement we discover what our dancing, drumming, hula hooping body movements looks like. We will explore painting, printmaking, and drawing with our bodies as the main art tool. Cover drums with a canvas, paint our hands and feet as you dance along to inspiring songs. Be prepared to get messy, groove to your favorite music, dance, drum, and create beautiful abstract works of art.

5. BETWEEN THE FOLDS

The term origami comes from the Japanese words “Oru” meaning “folded” and “Kami” meaning “paper.” It is an ancient art form spanning over 1000 years that has evolved into an international creative pastime! Through literature and folktale, we will learn the exquisite art of paper folding. Using a single (or several sheets) of decorative paper there are infinite
creative possibilities and you will be amazed at the results of folding and manipulation! Part sculpture, part paper folding and all rigorous engineering. Origami today, embodies animals and fantasy figures in an array of dimensions.

6. New – BIG TOP

Come one, come all! Learn and enjoy the art of Clowning! Clowning combines circus skills and techniques, physical education and character building in a non-competitive atmosphere. Try your hand at plate spinning, diablo, juggling, balancing, object manipulation, pantomime and slapstick. Develop skills like tumbling, balance work and group pyramids. Come along with us for this exciting big top experience and… be a clown, be a clown, be a clown!

7. BOARDWALK

Strategy and tactical skills will be improved through various card games like Gin Rummy, Black Jack and Dominion, a Medieval card game. Other games are played on a fun an analytical level such as Catan Jr., Munchkin Treasure Hunt and Elemento, a chemistry board game using the elements. Come join us in this test of gamesmanship!

8. New – BOTTLE BLING

Bring your favorite pop star, book, movie, sports team, rock band or abstract design to life on a glass bottle! This unique and modern art class will combine creativity and beautiful, colorful, expressive art materials such as magazines, pictures, ribbon, fabric, paper, decoupage and more! Your personal bottles and jars can be a very special gift for someone or will decorate your room with fun and happiness!

9. CHESS CHALLENGE

Chess is a tremendously popular activity at Challenge Camp! Come to play individual and team games against opponents of all ages and abilities. Develop your own chess strategy and tactics through supervised play.

10. CODE CENTRAL STATION: HTML

Are you interested in learning how to create your own website? Every webpage you look at is written in a language called HTML. You can think of HTML as the skeleton that gives every webpage its structure. Code literacy is an essential skill. In this introduction to HTML class, students will learn basic coding technique, how to think like a programmer, build a website and more!

11. CODE CENTRAL STATION: JAVA

Java is one of the most popular programming languages used by software developers today. It has evolved from a simple language providing interactive dynamic content for web pages to developing Android apps. This course will provide you with a solid foundation in computer science and Object Oriented Programming concepts while learning the basics of Java. The coding principles will provide campers with the skill set to learn advanced programming techniques. There are no prerequisites other than a desire to learn.

12. CODE CENTRAL STATION: PYTHON

Ever wonder how a computer program works? This course aims to teach the basics of Python, an object oriented programming language. Perfect for beginning programmers or budding technologists to squeeze programming power and fun out of their computer, Python uses a simple syntax and has an easy learning curve. Learn about variables, loops, decision statements, and other basic programming concepts using this easy-to-read programming language. The coding principles will provide the building blocks to learn programming languages in the future. There are no prerequisites other than a desire to learn.

13. CODE CENTRAL STATION: TINKER WITH TYNKER

Do you want to learn how to code and create something amazing today? In this class students will learn how to create their own video games using the Tynker software. Tynker is a visual programming language that enables students to create games and animated projects. Using visual code blocks, Tynker guides you through programming concepts – such as loops, conditional logic, sequencing, and algorithmic thinking. This will prepare them for learning programming languages like Javascript and Python. Students will learn how to tell a good story, logically sequence events, and model real situations while increasing their technical proficiency and confidence. The lessons will enable them to create their very own video games!

14. New – COLOR IN MOTION

Movement and music are very popular inspirations for interesting and creative artwork. Join us as we bring our class warmup movements to the art table as we create our own drawings and paintings based on things that move! Do you like the motion of butterflies and birds flying? Are you amazed at the speed and grace of horses running? Do you enjoy the waves crashing and rainbows bending? Watercolor, colored pencil, charcoal, chalk and more will help us express our thoughts and images in captivating multimedia art projects inspired by movement.

15. COMPUTER SIMULATION

Welcome to the exciting world of computers. Plan and build an entire city in “Sim City,” travel west as a pioneer on the “Oregon Trail,” create a theme park in “Roller Coaster Tycoon”, or enter the lightcycle arena in “Armagetron.” Delve into simulated strategies and tactics as we explore numerous engaging software titles.

16. New – COOKING AROUND THE WORLD

Grab your spoons and pack your aprons! In this class children will go on a tasty tour of nations far and wide! While learning fun cultural facts they will use global techniques (like working with rice paper) to embark on a creative journey with Mexican Flatbread Pizza, Asian Summer Rolls, Irish Soda Bread, Italian Lasagna, Matzo Bark, French Crepes, Greek Yogurt Salad, Pita Bread and Hummus, British Crumpets, South African Melon Salad, Aussie Damper Bread, Indian Potato Samosas and end safe at home with All American Watermelon Pizza! 17. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS

If you can imagine and think of lands and magical creatures, then you can play Dungeons and Dragons. Think of yourself as a character in a book. Imagine magical places items – many surprises lie in wait.

In this class we will make recipes perfect for even the tiniest of hands! Learning to use child safe utensils the children will discover new tastes, textures and tools. 19. FENCING

En garde! Learn the exciting Olympic sport of fencing! Parry, cut, and lunge, as you improve strength, coordination, focus, balance and more. Fencing is a high-speed, exhilarating sport that relies on quick wits and cunning, and engages the entire body along with the mind… and, most importantly, it’s FUN!

20. GLEE

Be a musical star in our show choir as we perform works from various Broadway shows, from Rodgers and Hammerstein classics to the latest pop songs. The course will focus on vocal technique, performance practice, stage presence and basic choreography. There will be opportunities for solo and ensemble singing. Join a choir that will be a showstopper!

21. GUITAR JAM

Campers can be complete beginners to intermediate players. This is a course designed to teach the fundamentals of guitar performance. Students will learn to put together elementary chords, melody playing and proper hand techniques to have them playing along with their favorite musicians. Class is a fun environment where we study songs that the students select. The course provides a basic study in beginning music theory with a goal to emphasize guitar technique and performance. The materials for the class include the Hal Leonard Method, and Supplements consisting of original materials and arrangements. If you do not own a guitar, we have several that students can use during class.

22. IT’S A SMALL WORLD

Through music and songs, we will discover many countries and their musical culture: Korea, France, Ireland, Africa and the United States. 23. JAMMIN’ DRUMS

For beginners to intermediate players this is a totally “hands-on” and unique approach to studying rhythm in many forms. Your teacher is a professional musician versed in all styles of music from classical to rock. Jammin’ Jim will play electric guitar to jam with you while you play the drum set on some of your favorite songs. We will discuss the history of percussion and look at rhythms from around the world. There will be lessons on hand drums, drum circle and playing a real drum set! We will play other percussion instruments like congas, shakers, cow bells, tambourines and more. 24. JEWEL BOX

This imaginative class centers around the design and creation of beaded jewelry. Color, pattern and individual style using beads, jewels, shells and feathers will set your designs apart! Bracelets, earrings, necklaces, pins, jeweled masks and anything you design is sure to give Tiffany and Cartier some competition.

25. JUNGLE SAFARI

The fascinating jungle ecosystem of unique and wild animals, plants and nature will come to life in this imaginative art class. Students will be exposed to the work of Henri Rousseau and his style of working with layers. You will create your own masterpiece including leaves, plants, zebras, hippos, snakes, elephants, giraffes, lions and more! Book now, space on this safari is limited.

26. JUNIOR VARSITY

Specifically designed for 5-7 year olds, this sports activity and recreational games program is a wonderful introduction to the world of sports. All activities are designed to enhance and develop motor skills, coordination and sportsmanship through active play and instruction. Some of these activities include: running games, parachute challenges, throwing, catching, kick ball, mini golf, wiffle ball and more.

27. KITE RUNNERS

Kite flying is a very popular pastime in many countries including China where they were invented and which hosts the largest international kite festival on Earth. Colorful designs often emulate flying insects, birds and other animals. Campers will build artistic Chinese inspired life size and decorative kites to fly in the Challenge Camp sky.

28. K’NEXplorations

This is a hands-on building experience designed to promote creativity and problem solving skills. Mathematical and Science design projects will be integrated to develop skill in construction using Rods and Connectors.

29. LE PETIT PRINCE

Visual, audio and tactile stimuli are all intertwined to allow your child to acquire French language in depth while having fun. Students dress up and perform dialogues from the story, and learn songs from the animated movie. C’est un rêve!

30. LEGO MINDSTORMS

Bring the fascinating world of robotic technology alive with Lego Mindstorms Robots! This robotics course teaches the students the principles of assembling and operating an interactive Lego Robot. Mathematical standards will be addressed as well as hands on building
of mechanical and electrical systems in robotics. Accurate measurement, geometric relationships, problem solving and reasoning skills will be stressed for success. Students will bring science to life utilizing many possible Lego designs in addition to their own creations.

31. LEGO WEDO ROBOTICS ACADEMY

Introduce robotics and computer programming with the award winning Lego WeDo! This is a hands on, challenging and fun way to learn about robots! This class will expose students to engineering, logical thinking, computer programming and team working skills. Campers will build a variety of robots with Lego and program their models to complete challenges, enhancing creativity and problem solving abilities.

32. LET’S GO YU-GI-OH

Yu-Gi-Oh is a popular card game for children. It combines strategy and imagination in fun battles. In one on one showdowns players must use their wits to out duel one another and win the game. In this class, beginners will learn the rules of the game and basics of creating a deck of cards. As players advance they will learn the strategy of play in attempting to become master of the game.

33. New – MARVELOUS MOSAICS

Explore the ancient art of mosaics in this fun and educational class. Broken pieces of colorful tile will be transformed into your artistic vision. The possibilities are endless for campers to create a mosaic masterpiece!

34. MECHANICAL MARVELS

A Rube Goldberg machine is a deliberately over-engineered machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction. In this class, dominoes may knock over a marble into a pegboard activating a pulley triggering a golf
ball into a zip line starting a toy truck that eventually grabs a tissue! You will investigate the fundamental concepts of engineering and construct wildly imaginative group mechanical marvels. Learn more at www.rubegoldberg.com.

35. New – MINDFUL ART

Campers will create works of art that encourage and facilitate a relaxed peaceful state of mind. In a friendly, creative, judgment free zone campers will be encouraged to tap into and connect with their mind, body, and soul that they will express through visual arts. Each period will start with a centering, breath work, and meditation, which will set the mood for their expressive, art making. Campers will experience working in many mediums including color pencil, paint, sand, collage, and more. They will explore making zentangles, mandalas, gratitude jars, dream catchers, dream paintings, intention boards and beyond.

36. New – MUSIQUE FANTASTIQUE

Learn French through music! Our students will learn a selection of vocabulary and sentence structures while having fun! Instrument playing, sing-along games, finger-play and puppets are used to enhance comprehension through repetition while hearing and feeling the rhythm of the language. Campers will continue practicing at home with a downloadable CD!

37. PICKLEBALL

This fast growing sport combines the elements of badminton, tennis and ping pong.  Played on a court with paddles and wiffle balls, pickleball is easier than tennis and fun to play with your friends.

38. New – POKEMON TCG

Back by popular demand! Pokemon TCG is an exciting and longtime favorite card game of strategy and skill where campers collect, train, and battle the cute Pokemon characters that inhabit their world. Beginning and experienced players will take on the role of a Pokemon Trainer and play another Trainer to knock each other’s Pokemon out of the battle! Your camp Pokemon deck will be supplied and booster packs await the masters!

39. New – POP ART CANDY

This multi media painting class will focus on your favorite sweets! We will use papers, magazines, plastics and more to complete your pop art paintings of giant ice cream sundaes, candy, cookies and desserts. Made on canvas, these creative, bright and delicious works of art allow you to decide how and where the spoon goes and just how to put the cherry on top!

40.PRINTING THE FUTURE

Have you ever dreamed of being able to literally make anything you could imagine? Enter the realm of 3D printing! 3D printing is a technology where you create a 3D file using computer software and a machine makes that object, layer by layer, in plastic filament. The possibilities these machines enable in the art and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields are endless. Campers will learn how to create their own individual 3D models using a variety of software including TinkerCad, Trimble Sketchup, and OpenSCAD with uses ranging from inventing to making art. Campers will take home their own printers and finally have the objects of their imagination.

41. RASPBERRYPI

RaspberryPi is the world’s smallest, least expensive and most powerful computer for its size. RaspberryPi was developed by a British company with the purpose of teaching children how to really use a computer, from inline Linux shell commands to basic programming with scripting languages. The Pi is capable of doing many things a full size computer can do such as playing simple games or web browsing. There is an endless supply of projects that can be completed with the Pi. Each camper will take home a basic RaspberryPi starter kit and a project guide for future experimentation.

42. ROCKET UNIVERSITY

Rocketry, aerospace engineering and preparing for the “Final Frontier of Exploration.” Students will train to be real “rocket scientists” and “aerospace engineers” in this inspired offering. In “Rocket University” you will learn about the history of rockets from ancient Chinese fireworks, to modern day spacecraft and military applications while discovering principals of launching, trajectories, thrust, navigation, flight paths, altitudes, orbits, recovery methods, safety and more! Students will receive their individual rocket kits and assemble them while applying what they have learned to their design and construction. You will launch your rockets and record data. Rocketeers are awarded certificates for best design and rocket performance.

43. ROCKET UNIVERSITY 2

This is a course for advanced Rocketeers who have completed Rocketry 1.  Students will build and launch more complex models.

44. SECRET GARDEN

Let your imagination blossom as you create your own beautiful artistic garden. You will plant your garden with the living colors of your palette. Materials will include an array of papers, water color, flowers, stones, glitter and more! Works by Monet, Van Gogh and O’Keefe will be our inspiration.

45. New – SKATEBOARD DECK DESIGN

Skateboarding is about having fun and expressing your own individual style. Explore the world of pop and graffiti art by designing, sketching, drawing and painting to create your own brand of skateboards, logos, and all things skater! Your canvas is a skateboard, and campers will leave with their personally designed skateboard deck protected with clear coat, perfect for hanging as wall art or ready to add hardware for skating! Think of the possibilities and make your skateboard the coolest one on the block!

46. STAGE DOOR

Enter the world of theatrical production! Learn the art of costume and set design. Under the guidance of our artistic director, we will research, measure, design and create original costumes for the musical theatre productions of “The Lion King” and “Peter Pan”. Costumes/scenery will be constructed of fabric, paper, foam board, paint and other materials. This imaginative behind the scenes process will bring our production to “Life” and provide an awareness of the importance of stagecraft and design skills to the production. Participants from the theatrical cast are encouraged to join and other non-performers are all welcome!

47. New – STREAM

STREAM stands for Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. This innovative course focuses on academic integration of all these subjects through the arts to create something truly extraordinary! Together, we will explore complex academic ideas through art and as well as the science behind creativity. STREAM goes beyond the boundaries of a traditional art class by introducing exciting hands on learning activities involving dry ice, exothermic reactions, projectiles, non-Newtonian fluids, cymatics, luminescence, paint synthesis, Renaissance Art, DNA extraction and more… STREAM can make any ideas in any subject flow together in harmony.

48. SURVIVOR!

Orienteering, wilderness survival and emergency preparedness is about more that just lighting a fire and pitching a tent. Campers can build a water filter from found objects, communicate with emergency signaling methods, build shelter, find food, make emergency fires more than 5 different ways…even with a cell phone. We will have a scavenger hunt, play camouflage and learn Geocaching. Our session will end with a “wild marshmallow” hunt, s’mores, stories and songs.

49. New – SWEET SUMMER TREATS

If you love being creative with sweets this is the class for you! This is a hands on, skill building and fun class! Children will have the exciting experience of using an assortment of baking tools such as, rolling pins, whisks, pastry bags and chocolate molds! Some of the amazing treats they will make are: Unicorn Bark, Ice Cream, Cupcake Baking/Decorating, Chocolate Candies, New York Style Soft Pretzels, Apple Pie Muffins, S’mores Clusters, Cinnamon Buns, Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake, Chocolate Lasagna and Marshmallows from scratch! 50. SWIMMING

Get your feet wet with swim instruction at Challenge Camp! We will be swimming at Swimlabs Westchester, a state of the art indoor facility 10 minutes from camp. This unique facility creates the perfect way for new swimmers and competitive swimmers to swim better, stronger, faster and safer. Campers must provide a swim suit, towel and bag. 51. TAEKWONDO

Literally “the art of kicking and punching”, Taekwondo is a martial art that has developed over the course of thousands of years with the earliest records of its practice dating back to 50 B.C. from Korea. It is a highly disciplined art of self-defense, physical prowess, and moral discipline. It is distinguished from other martial arts by its varied and unique powerful kicks. In 2000, it earned a place as a full medal sport in the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

52. New – TURBO TRUCKS

How would you like to race a remote control truck on the Challenge Speedway? 53. ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Ultimate Frisbee is an exciting, non-contact team sport that is played throughout the world and whose popularity continues to rise.  Ultimate is a unique mixture of Frisbee, football and soccer, providing an exhilarating workout. The spirit of the game stresses sportsmanship and fair play.

54. VARSITY

Sports-O-Plenty; in this course we will explore a variety of sports and field activities. The campers will play a wide range of sports which will include: flag football, mini-golf, volleyball, obstacle course & field games, kick-ball, etc. This class is designed to keep the campers moving!

55. VIVE LA FRANCE

Travel to Paris and the provinces of France. Discover the French countryside and the Gardens of Tuileries. Traverse the Loire River, villages, food, and music. Students pack their suitcase and travel with a real boarding pass and train tickets from the SNCF. This is a very interactive program including role-plays to allow students to learn the basics of the French language. Allons-y!

56. YELLOW SUBMARINE

Experience the music and phenomenon of the Beatles as we uncover how four lads from Liverpool impacted the world of music. For over 50 years, their songs have delighted young and old alike. Learn classics such as “Yellow Submarine,” “With a Little Help from my Friends,” “I Want to Hold your Hand,” ”Help,” “Here Comes the Sun,” and “Blackbird.” Discover the joy of the Beatles music through song and instruction in percussion and keyboard. Students will participate in a Beatles inspired class recording.

57. YOGA

Learn to relax and let go of control by experiencing the power and concentration found in yoga exercises. While stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. Proper exercise clothing required: loose pants, T-shirt and yoga mat.
