Afternoon Challenge

There are three periods in the Afternoon Challenge. Campers choose one class for each period, from over 50 enrichment and sports options based on their age or grade level at the start of the previous school year. What is a robot without a brain? Why is a smart phone so smart? How do you make your computer turn a motor? All of these are a result of microcontrollers, the next step in computing and technology. Here is an opportunity to learn how to use microcontrollers using the Arduino platform, a microcontroller that is both simple to use and quite powerful. Learn the basics of electrical engineering and programming as we build a number of projects using just the basic starter kit and your imagination!

So much fun for our littlest campers! We will begin each class with a themed dance such as “Hawaiian Luau” or “Animal Safari” and then create an art piece related to our dance using clay, colored pencils, cut paper and more.


Bloxels are a hands-on, brains-on, creativity and technology experience. Bloxels unlock students creativity by leveraging something they love: video games. Students can play fun games and channel their creative potential as they gain greater understanding of important topics like design logic, and computer science and demonstrate their knowledge of history, science and mathematics and more through the games they create. Take home your own Bloxels set and board and the creativity going!

Strategy and tactical skills will be improved through various card games like Black Jack and Dominion, a Medieval card game. Other games are played on a fun an analytical level such as Catan Jr., Ticket to Ride and Elemento, a chemistry board game using the elements. Come join us in this test of gamesmanship!


Chess is a tremendously popular activity at Challenge Camp! Come to play individual and team games against opponents of all ages and abilities. Develop your own chess strategy and tactics through supervised play.


Every webpage you look at is written in a language called HTML, the skeleton that gives every webpage its structure. Java is a popular programming language that provides interactive dynamic content for web pages. This course will provide you with a solid foundation in web design, computer science and Object Oriented Programming concepts while learning the basics of Java and HTML. Code literacy is an essential skill that will provide campers with coding principles to learn advanced programming techniques. There are no prerequisites other than a desire to learn.


This course aims to teach the basics of Python, an object oriented programming language. Perfect for beginning programmers or budding technologists to squeeze programming power and fun out of their computer, Python uses a simple syntax and has an easy learning curve. Learn about variables, loops, decision statements, and other basic programming concepts using this easy-to-read programming language. The coding principles will provide the building blocks to learn programming languages in the future. There are no prerequisites other than a desire to learn.


In this class, students will learn how to create their own video games using the Tynker software. Tynker is a visual programming language that enables students to create games and animated projects. Using visual code blocks, Tynker guides you through programming concepts – such as loops, conditional logic, sequencing, and algorithmic thinking. This will prepare them for learning programming languages like Java and Python. Students will learn how to tell a good story, logically sequence events, and model real situations while increasing their technical proficiency and confidence. The lessons will enable them to create their very own video games!


Welcome to the exciting world of computers. Plan and build an entire city in “Sim City,” travel west as a pioneer on the “Oregon Trail,” create a theme park in “Roller Coaster Tycoon”, or enter the lightcycle arena in “Armagetron.” Delve into simulated strategies and tactics as we explore numerous engaging software titles.


By emphasizing a health and fitness approach to activity, Core Sports will include daily stretching and exercises to strengthen our bodies and minds. Your kinetic energy will soar as we play a variety of outdoor sports, obstacle course and field games. This class is designed introduce fitness techniques, and keep campers active through fun sports games!


In this class, campers will learn the basics of cooking and healthy eating. Cooking is both a science and an art. They will learn how to measure, mix and chop ingredients so that they can complete a recipe from start to finish. We will learn breakfast, healthy lunch/dinner meals and a surprise week sure to “moo”ve your sweet tooth.

If you can imagine and think of lands and magical creatures, then you can play Dungeons and Dragons. Think of yourself as a character in a book. Imagine magical places items – many surprises lie in wait.


En garde! Learn the exciting Olympic sport of fencing! Parry, cut, and lunge, as you improve strength, coordination, focus, balance and more. Fencing is a high-speed, exhilarating sport that relies on quick wits and cunning, and engages the entire body along with the mind… and, most importantly, it’s FUN!

This class is designed to keep the campers moving! Field sports will explore a variety of athletic activities and will include: kickball, flag football, frisbee, soccer and field games like obstacle course and relay races.


Secure your goggles as we dive into the ocean and learn about the fascinating world of sea life. All oceanographers will use a myriad of materials including color paper, paint, shells, glitter, found objects and personal treasures to create a beautiful sea sculpture mobile inspired by life under the sea.

16. GLEE

Be a musical star in our show choir as we perform works from various Broadway shows, from Rodgers and Hammerstein classics to the latest pop songs. The course will focus on vocal technique, performance practice, stage presence and basic choreography. There will be opportunities for solo and ensemble singing. Join a choir that will be a showstopper!


Campers can be complete beginners to intermediate players. This is a course designed to teach the fundamentals of guitar performance. Students will learn to put together elementary chords, melody playing and proper hand techniques to have them playing along with their favorite musicians. Class is a fun environment where we study songs that the students select. The course provides a basic study in beginning music theory with a goal to emphasize guitar technique and performance. The materials for the class include the Hal Leonard Method, and Supplements consisting of original materials and arrangements. If you do not own a guitar, we have several that students can use during class.


Learning to be limitless through movement, this action packed hip hop class consists of dance and musical activities that help students with leadership and confidence. Energetic choreography grooves from old school to new school while learning generations of music.


Through music and songs, we will discover many countries and their musical culture: Korea, France, Ireland, Africa and the United States. You will build a likembe, also called kalimba and make your own “one of a kind” instrument out of recycled materials. For more on instructor Armelle, go to


Get ready for a tasty trip around the world with lessons in international cuisine from Mexico to France to Italy to Israel. Tempt your taste buds by making such favorites like homemade chips and salsa, crepes, pizza and falafel with tzaziki sauce. We will also learn the origins behind these delicious treats. Every “traveler” will take home their finished products as well as a folder filled with fun facts and recipes from the different countries we “visit” as we discover the flavors and spices that make them unique.

For beginners to intermediate players this is a totally “hands-on” and unique approach to studying rhythm in many forms. Your teacher is a professional musician versed in all styles of music from classical to rock. Jammin’ Jim will play electric guitar to jam with you while you play the drum set on some of your favorite songs. We will discuss the history of percussion and look at rhythms from around the world. There will be lessons on hand drums, drum circle and playing a real drum set! We will play other percussion instruments like congas, shakers, cow bells, tambourines and more. Don’t miss this chance to learn and play with a real rock/jazz musician!


Specifically designed for 5-7 year olds, this sports activity and recreational games program is a wonderful introduction to the world of sports. All activities are designed to enhance and develop motor skills, coordination and sportsmanship through active play and instruction. Some of these activities include: running games, parachute challenges, throwing, catching, kick ball, mini golf, wiffle ball and more.

23. K’NEXplorations

This is a hands-on building experience designed to promote creativity and problem solving skills. Mathematical and Science design projects will be integrated to develop skill in construction using Rods and Connectors.


Visual, audio and tactile stimuli are all intertwined to allow your child to acquire French language in depth while having fun. Students dress up and perform dialogues from the story, and learn songs from the animated movie. C’est un rêve!


Bring the fascinating world of robotic technology alive with Lego Mindstorms Robots! This robotics course teaches the students the principles of assembling and operating an interactive Lego Robot. Mathematical standards will be addressed as well as hands on building of mechanical and electrical systems in robotics. Accurate measurement, geometric relationships, problem solving and reasoning skills will be stressed for success. Students will bring science to life utilizing many possible Lego designs in addition to their own creations.


Introduce robotics and computer programming with the award winning Lego WeDo! This is a hands on, challenging and fun way to learn about robots! This class will expose students to engineering, logical thinking, computer programming and team working skills. Campers will build a variety of robots with Lego and program their models to complete challenges, enhancing creativity and problem solving abilities.


Yu-Gi-Oh is a popular card game for children. It combines strategy and imagination in fun battles. In one on one showdowns players must use their wits to out duel one another and win the game. In this class, beginners will learn the rules of the game and basics of creating a deck of cards. As players advance they will learn the strategy of play in attempting to become master of the game.


A Rube Goldberg machine is a deliberately over-engineered machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction. In this class, dominoes may knock over a marble into a pegboard activating a pulley triggering a golf ball into a zip line starting a toy truck that eventually grabs a tissue! You will investigate the fundamental concepts of engineering and construct wildly imaginative group mechanical marvels. Learn more at

29. New – MOGA

A flow through exercise that aligns mind body and soul make up this modern yoga class. Several styles of movement are fused including fundamentals of Tai Chi and yoga. . Proper exercise clothing required: loose pants, T-shirt and yoga mat.


Learn French through music! Our students will learn a selection of vocabulary and sentence structures while having fun! Instrument playing, sing-along games, finger-play and puppets are used to enhance comprehension through repetition while hearing and feeling the rhythm of the language. Campers will continue practicing at home with a downloadable CD!


In this active class, campers will have fun exploring movement through creative elements. Utilizing props and obstacle courses, all will be physically challenged in a multitude of ways helping them gain body awareness and coordination. Campers will explore a range of movements including dynamic jumping, leaping and running as well as more controlled balance and stretching. Speed and endurance will be improved as well as elements of engagement and focus. The goal of this class is to build body confidence and have fun.


This fast growing sport combines the elements of badminton, tennis and ping pong.  Played on a court with paddles and wiffle balls, pickleball is easier than tennis and fun to play with your friends.

Back by popular demand! Pokemon TCG is an exciting and longtime favorite card game of strategy and skill where campers collect, train, and battle the cute Pokemon characters that inhabit their world. Beginning and experienced players will take on the role of a Pokemon Trainer and play another Trainer to knock each other’s Pokemon out of the battle! This multi media painting class will focus on your favorite emojis. We will use papers, magazines, plastics and more to complete your pop art paintings of smileys, people, animals, objects and activity! Made on canvas, these creative, bright and modern works of art allow you to decide how and where the emojis pop!

Have you ever dreamed of being able to literally make anything you could imagine? Enter the realm of 3D printing! 3D printing is a technology where you create a 3D file using computer software and a machine makes that object, layer by layer, in plastic filament. The possibilities these machines enable in the art and STEM fields are endless. Campers will learn how to create their own individual 3D models using a variety of software including TinkerCad, Trimble Sketchup, and OpenSCAD with uses ranging from inventing to making art. Campers will take home their own printers and finally have the objects of their imagination.

Enter Jim Henson’s workshop. Everyone loves the colorful, furry characters who lived on the Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Join us to make adorable familiar hand puppets of characters like Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Elmo or Cookie Monster. Explore your own creativity by designing an original furry friend for our puppet show performance.


RaspberryPi is the world’s smallest, least expensive and most powerful computer for its size. RaspberryPi was developed by a British company with the purpose of teaching children how to really use a computer, from inline Linux shell commands to basic programming with scripting languages. The Pi is capable of doing many things a full size computer can do such as playing simple games or web browsing. There is an endless supply of projects that can be completed with the Pi. Each camper will take home a basic RaspberryPi starter kit and a project guide for future experimentation.

Recycle your empty jars and containers turning them into wonderful works of art! We will use paper, paint, twine and found objects to decoupage, embellish and beautify empty cans, bottles, drawer dividers, boxes, paper bags and flower pots.


Rocketry, aerospace engineering and preparing for the “Final Frontier of Exploration.” Students will train to be real “rocket scientists” and “aerospace engineers” in this inspired offering. In “Rocket University” you will learn about the history of rockets from ancient Chinese fireworks, to modern day spacecraft and military applications while discovering principals of launching, trajectories, thrust, navigation, flight paths, altitudes, orbits, recovery methods, safety and more! Students will receive their individual rocket kits and assemble them while applying what they have learned to their design and construction. You will launch your rockets and record data. Rocketeers are awarded certificates for best design and rocket performance.

Skateboarding is about having fun and expressing your own individual style. Explore the world of pop and graffiti art by designing, sketching, drawing and painting to create your own brand of skateboards, logos, and all things skater! Your canvas is a skateboard, and campers will leave with their personally designed skateboard deck protected with clear coat, perfect for hanging as wall art or ready to add hardware for skating! Think of the possibilities and make your skateboard the coolest one on the block!

Enter the world of theatrical production! Learn the art of costume and set design. Under the guidance of our artistic director, we will research, measure, design and create original costumes for the musical theatre productions of “Shrek The Musical Jr.” and “Matilda, the True Story”. Costumes/scenery will be constructed of fabric, paper, foam board, paint and other materials. This imaginative behind the scenes process will bring our production to “Life” and provide an awareness of the importance of stagecraft and design skills to the production. Participants from the theatrical cast are encouraged to join and other non-performers are all welcome!


Have you ever watched a movie like the “Kubo and the Two Strings”, “Fantastic Mr. Fox”, or “Coraline” and wondered how they made it? Now you can learn how! In this hands-on animation class, campers will be exploring film making through the lens of Stop Motion. Campers will create storyboards and then be introduced to a number of stop motion animation techniques that will allow them to bring their ideas to life in a short film!

Orienteering, wilderness survival and emergency preparedness is about more that just lighting a fire and pitching a tent. Campers can build a water filter from found objects, communicate with emergency signaling methods, build shelter, find food, make emergency fires more than 5 different ways…even with a cell phone. We will have a scavenger hunt, play camouflage and learn Geocaching. Our session will end with a “wild marshmallow” hunt, s’mores, stories and songs.


Baking cupcakes, cookies and brownies is a creative, edible expression of happiness. We will incorporate math skills as we measure, mix and divide our way through baking techniques for decadent treats such as homemade brownies, cupcakes and cookies.

Get your feet wet with swim instruction at Challenge Camp! We will be swimming at Swimlabs Westchester, a state of the art indoor facility 10 minutes from camp. This unique facility creates the perfect way for new swimmers and competitive swimmers to swim better, stronger, faster and safer. Literally “the art of kicking and punching”, Tae kwon do is a martial art that has developed over the course of thousands of years with the earliest records of its practice dating back to 50 B.C. from Korea. It is a highly disciplined art of self-defense, physical prowess, and moral discipline. It is distinguished from other martial arts by its varied and unique powerful kicks.


How would you like to race a remote control truck on the Challenge Speedway? In this class you will have the chance to race a fully ready Traxxas Rustler known for fun and durability and with more power, smoother control, better grip, and performance that makes it one of the fastest electric trucks available. Race around outdoor courses that you design with cones, ramps and more. You will get to keep your car/equipment in this action packed driving and racing class. Eric Carle’s many books represent warmth, security, playfulness and a positive message. Make your own hungry caterpillar, brown bear and grouchy ladybug and more using foam shapes, paper mache, paper, paint, glitter, eyes and antennae. Using Carle’s books such as “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” as inspiration, this creative art class will focus on his characters and themes of animals and nature.


Travel to Paris and the provinces of France. Discover the French countryside and the Gardens of Tuileries. Traverse the Loire River, villages, food, and music. Students pack their suitcase and travel with a real boarding pass and train tickets from the SNCF. This is a very interactive program including role-plays to allow students to learn the basics of the French language. Allons-y!

54. YOGA

Learn to relax and let go of control by experiencing the power and concentration found in yoga exercises. While stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. Proper exercise clothing required: loose pants, T-shirt and yoga mat.
