1. Map-Quest
Instructor: Jacqui Roytman
Imagine if you will, Carmen San Diego’s henchmen have stolen a rare cultural object. The Challenge Crime Detective Agency hires gumshoes (you) to find the crook and recover the loot. The gumshoe who captures the crook is then given the chance to locate and capture Carmen San Diego by finding countries on a large map of the world. We gather our clues all week long through an assortment of activities that range from a scavenger hunt to deciphering codes. At the end of each week we will participate in the “Game Show”. The host, the Chief, and a variety of other guests help the gumshoes by supplying clues. Each week will take us on a different quest throughout the World. Help pursue the international thief as junior detectives, and answer the questions during the weekly game show…Let’s go to the map!

2. Astronomy Delight!
Instructor: Ed Forrest
The extremely popular and nationally recognized Astronomy Delight! is an extraordinary class for the inquisitive child designed to inspire children and develop a true love of learning. Through story and legend, NASA and Hubble space telescope slides of the moon, planets, stars and galaxies, students learn about spaceflight, astronauts, new discoveries, and even cosmology while viewing the sun, planets and celestial wonders of the daylight universe through large professional telescopes. Meet “ROAI” the alien and “Katie the Comet with no tail” while learning about the effect of light pollution on animals and nature, black holes, and even alien life forms! Student role-play, fun “hands-on” experiments, props, graduation certificates and awards all serve to increase the student’s self-esteem and sense of wonder about the world around them!NEW THIS SUMMER by parent request is instruction for both parent and child in the assembly, use and calibration of a professional 6” astronomical telescope designed for a lifelong journey for the whole family in amateur astronomy. 5. Insects, Bugs and Squiggly Things

If you are just “buggy” about the lives of insects you must join us as we enter the truly fascinating world of entomology! This course is an exciting hands-on approach to studying insects. Observe and document how caterpillars grow into colorful, lively butterflies and analyze other species of bugs alive in our classroom. How do ladybugs fly? Do silkworms really produce silk? We will explore these and many other mysteries of the insect world. Fun activities will include insect hunts, creating insect books, games and more!

7. Fiesta de Musica

Quieres Hablar Espanol? Would you like to learn Spanish? Come travel south of the border and enter a fiesta of language and music as we learn songs from Spanish speaking countries. Students will discover the joy of language through song and dance with instruction in music theory while learning how to play the recorder and keyboard. Our class will culminate in a festival of song, dance and instrumental performance. Music Fee: $ 25.00

9. The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Instructor: Joseph Fields
If magic is your bag, you’ll want to join Joseph Fields to learn about the history of magic, ropes and scarves, cards and coins, cups and balls and balloon sculpture. The aim of this course is to introduce the basic skills involved in sleight-of-hand and showmanship. Attention will focus on impromptu tricks with everyday objects as well as presentation and performance before an audience with your own bag of tricks!

10. Checkmate 1
Instructor: Anatoly Tonkonogy
An introduction to the exciting world of chess. Students will learn basic opening, middlegame, and endgame strategies and how to achieve a proper coordination of pieces. Chess notation will be taught in order to review games. Instruction will establish an appropriate balance between lecture, discussion and structured play. Chess sets and boards are provided for daily chess practice. As a special learning opportunity the Russian language will be introduced as it relates to chess play. Remember, chess makes you smart!

11. LEGOMania

Imagine, Dream, Do - This creative class will take you on a journey that begins with an exploration of architecture and continues with the development of futuristic cars, flights of fancy, space travel to envision tomorrows hottest styles through Lego design. Using your imagination and LEGOs, lots of LEGOs, you will create, design and build homes, trains, planes, cars or robots. An added bonus this year will be Forces and Motion to complement projects like the Sweeper, Big Game Fishing and Freewheeling. Lego Fee: $ 25.00

12. LEGOLand
Instructor: John Fitzsimmons
Use Legos as the inspiration to construct, investigate and communicate like young Einsteins. Students will use models to predict, observe, measure and collect data, experiencing forces, motion, energy, mechanisms and magnetism first hand. They will develop complex problem solving skills and understand the interaction between forces and motion, measurement, energy, speed (velocity) and weight (mass). Science, technology and mathematical Lego models of a Land Yacht, Flywheeler, Windmill, Click-Clock, Magno-Bird and others will serve as the medium for this scientific experimentation. The basics of pneumatics will be introduced this summer. Students will explore power systems and components, sequence and control, pressure, prototyping, kinetic and potential energy. Special elements will include pumps, cylinders, valves, an air tank, tubes and a manometer. Lego Fee: $25.00

13. “Beauty and the Beast”
Instructor: Anne Pasquale, Artistic Director Regina Talbot, Musical Director
Join us as we present the enchanting musical, Beauty and the Beast. The brainy and beautiful Belle yearns to escape her provincial life…and her brute of a suitor, Gaston. However, Belle gets more adventurous then she wanted when she becomes captive in the Beast’s enchanted castle! Characters like the Beast, Lumiere, Chip and Mrs. Potts, Cogsworth, Gaston and Belle will be cast in this beloved fairy tale about very different people finding strength in one another and learning how to love. You will perform the songs, “Be Our Guest”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Gaston” and “Human Again.” Lead roles will require several ½ hour recess rehearsals. The students will create and produce the show for performance at the conclusion of the first session for parents and campers. Script, score, costume and materials fee: $ 50.00

16. A Taste of China

China is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, with a written history dating back 3,600 years. It possesses rich historical documents as well as ancient relics. Today China is entering the modern age on a global scale. Knowledge of the Chinese people and their language will be very important in the future. The course will provide an opportunity for students to learn about the Chinese language, history and culture. Students will participate in traditional Chinese games and learn brush painting and paper folding/cutting. Chinese cooking will be emphasized weekly as we sample many foods and flavors from the region. Join us for a delightful taste of China.

17. Brain Strains

Brain Strains is an engaging and exciting hands-on curriculum that allows children to build math skills through brain teasers, riddles, logic games, puzzles, rubrics and fantasy baseball. Baseball provides a terrific opportunity to ‘sharpen our pencils’ and our math skills during the summer. The children draft their baseball players and track their game results using the MLB box scores that appear daily. These creative activities help children enhance their math and problem solving skills. “Brain Strains” is the ultimate numbers challenge! Math is about being smart, having intuition and being creative.

20. The Challenger

EXTRA!!EXTRA!! This exciting class offers a very special opportunity to be part of Challenge Camp’s 30th anniversary magazine dedicated to the students’ thoughts, memories and experiences at Challenge. You will embrace your creative, artistic and inquisitive sides as we learn how to write every sort of article imaginable. The Challenge campus, courses, staff and fellow campers will inspire your feature articles, reviews, editorials and profiles. You will enhance your writing skills while learning how to research stories and conduct interviews. An entirely student-created Challenger 30th Anniversary Magazine will be published and distributed to all campers and posted on our website at challengecamps.com.

23. CITYscapes

Create your own three-dimensional artwork a la Charles Fazzino! After being introduced to magnificent Mayan, European and Asian architectural styles, you will design your own imaginary city and using this fascinating technique, will create a cityscape that will literally POP off the page! This program integrates an appreciation of architecture with learning how to design, plan and produce 3-D art.

24. Legal Eagles

Do you want to know what happens inside of a real courtroom? Who are the people involved and what are their duties? Do you think you would make a great lawyer…or even a Judge? What do witnesses and jurors have to do? In this action-packed course you will learn courtroom trial procedures and portray the defendants, lawyers, judges and witnesses in our dramatic courtroom simulations.

Why do people enjoy racing cars? When and how did car racing evolve into the fast paced high tech sport it is today? What elements make a winning driver/racecar team? Utilizing the hugely popular Mini-Z racer, campers will experience the technology and skill of auto racing. Because of their unique design and compact size the Mini-Z can be raced anywhere; a basement, garage, or classroom can instantly be transformed into a race track. Mini-Z’s are exciting to drive and give flexibility to upgrade and fine tune. Emphasis will be placed on the science of racing, speed, maneuvering, strategy, maintenance and safety. 28. Come Fly With Me

Welcome to the exciting world of aeromodeling. The milestones of aviation will be highlighted from the Wright Brothers to modern day drones. You’ll learn about the science of flight and how planes actually take off, soar through the atmosphere and land. As a junior aviator you’ll discover how pilots file a flight plan, communicate with the tower and plan an approach. Learn how to assemble, fly and repair your own remote control model airplane with hands on flight training. Each Junior Pilot will receive his/her own airplane and radio control supplies. 29. Emerald City

Come with me on a journey throughout architectural history. You will be exploring and discovering the development of different architectural styles. We will take an imaginary trip through ancient Greece, Rome, historic American architecture, and the modern structures of today and the future. A variety of materials will be available to construct a village, city, or neighborhood using the styles that were introduced and studied.

Be clairvoyant! Look into the crystal ball and discover the history of magic and predict the future. Learn about the legendary magicians: Merlin, Houdini and David Copperfield. Style, imagination, individuality and creativity will be encouraged to develop a magical act. Advanced magical secrets, illusion and sleight-of-hand will highlight this course as well as presentation and performance before an audience. 32. Checkmate II

Suitable for students who have already acquired a working knowledge of chess. The course will focus on methods of attack and defense, on long term strategical planning as well as tactics and combinations. Chess set and board are provided for daily practice. 33. Let's Make a Video

Join one of this class's video production teams and get in on the fun of making an exciting video. The types of videos that will be created can include animation, comedy, music video and drama "movies". Learn about planning for a "shoot," camera operation, acting and directing. Each team will create and produce their own video. No previous experience necessary - just a willingness to get in on the action.

34. Grand Prix

Prepare to break into the world of Real Radio Control. We will build an introductory model which will feature powerful electric motors, actual suspensions and rechargeable batteries for “never-ending” fun in competition. Materials fee includes 1/10th scale radio control model, 2 channel radio, 2 rechargeable batteries, AC/DC Battery charger, paint, and necessary tools. You will be sent a form to select model and possible upgrades. Assembly, finishing, customizing, tuning up and participating in competitions are just a few of the skills you will learn in this unlimited world of radio control modeling.

35. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Anyone can watch a cartoon, but have you ever wanted to make one? Today's art of computer animation is a perfect combination of creativity and technology. In this class, you become the animator who creates characters, gives them action and changes their expressions. Incorporating art and computer skills, students take advantage of Flash MX as they learn the basics behind computer/web animation. This class begins with learning the fundamentals of animating shapes and text and progresses into developing characters to star in their own multi-layered cartoons.

Do you want to enhance your web browsing technique? Are you interested in computers and artistic design? This class will enhance your knowledge and challenge your creative flair. All of the students will be able to connect to many different internet addresses, as well as hundreds of different locations. We will browse through some of the most interesting home pages from around the world. After becoming expert Web explorers, students will create their own exciting and dynamic home page using the latest web design software. This course will include audio, video, graphic, animation, color and interactivity. The best Web site will be uploaded to the Challenge Camp 2010 home page.

39. The ART of Architecture
Instructor: Joseph Hutchins
A unique opportunity to initiate your own project and to develop new ideas and solutions. The design and construction of a scale model is a flexible, open-minded project which utilizes brainstorming, provides opportunities for divergent thinking as well as the development of a sensitivity to our environment. We start with concepts of ratio and proportion and conclude with a scale model built according to each student's own specifications. Each architecture student will be responsible for selecting and purchasing building material.

40. Mock Trial
Instructor: Gail Ehrlich Peters
In this intriguing law class we will examine details of the trial process and the overall role of our legal system. As a lawyer, you will learn how to make strong arguments to a judge and jury. How do you convince someone that your point of view is the right one? Guest speakers including policemen, attorneys, and judges will be invited to share their experiences with the class. Your skills will be tested as we simulate trials in our “straight from the headlines” cases and reach a verdict.

41. Lights, Camera, Action

In this class students learn how to create videos that go beyond music video and MTV. Join one of this classes video production teams and learn how to make an animated video, video movie or a comedy for TV. Students will plan, shoot, direct and act in a video. They will learn how to create an original teleplay, operate a camera and edit the final product. No previous experience necessary Just bring a creative spirit and be part of the live action video team.

43. Counselor In Training (CIT)
Instructor: Marcy Geisser-Wolf
This course designed for students who are 15 years old is an exceptional opportunity to learn and train to be a counselor in the Challenge environment. The course meets daily first period and will involve such topics as : Camper socialization, Assistant teaching and coaching, Building self-esteem, Conflict resolution and more. Lunch is provided and the remainder of the day will be spent hands on with our campers utilizing new skills. CIT'S will receive full CPR and FIRST AID certification as part of this curriculum. This course is continuous for 7 weeks and will allow you to grow as an individual with an emphasis on achievement, maturity and responsibility.
